What does it mean to measure shore gradient or beach composition?

I was reading up on some articles about SEAL operations and I am not sure what it means to measure the shores gradient or beach composition. This is what it says in the article; "SEALs from Team One swam to shore, measuring water depth, shore gradient, and beach composition to create maps and secure the landing."
