Freedom of information act in the US and UK, anyone familiar with it?

I have just found out about this act and it seems like a fantastic thing to exploit. I'm a resident in the UK and i'd very much like to see what information the government has on me, how can i do this? Is it possible to do this with murder investigations within the US? Mabye i'm morbid but reading about this would be very interesting.
